Elmhurst Goes for the Gold

The Elmhurst Park District is pleased to announce that it has once again been named a finalist in the 2010 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. This national award is presented by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA) in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).

Salt Creek Greenway Trail Update

After years of study and planning, citizen input and public meetings, the Salt Creek Greenway Trail is finally a reality in Elmhurst ensuring our status as a bike friendly community. At the August 9, 2010 meeting of the Elmhurst Park District Board of Commissioners, the Park Board approved the following motion regarding the Salt Creek Greenway Trail Alignment:

To follow the alternative sanctioned by Forest Preserve District staff to install off-street signage at a northern point (such as along the Illinois Prairie Path) and at a southern point (somewhere south of Madison) to indicate that the trail continues ahead thus providing some general direction for trail users without designating any specific street(s) and complete the connection point at Madison and Fairview.

The Salt Creek Greenway Trail is a multi-agency project that includes Addison Park District, Village of Addison, Elmhurst Park District, Village of Oak Brook, Oak Brook Park District, Brookfield Zoo, Village of Lyons, Forest Preserve District of Cook County, and Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and serves as a model of intergovernmental cooperation.

The Salt Creek Greenway Trail is designated a priority greenway in the Northeastern Illinois Regional Greenways Plan and extends through nine communities and Cook and DuPage Counties.

Funds for the Elmhurst portion of the Salt Creek Greenway Trail were provided by grants from the Illinois Department of Transportation, The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the DuPage Mayors and Managers Transportation Control Measures Program.

A copy of the entire August 9, 2010 Board Packet is available on the Park Board page for viewing.
